Subject: The potential use of natural antimicrobial compounds to reduce decay of strawberries in the supply chain.

About Project

Improved quality of fresh fruit and vegetables with active packaging

Fresh fruit and vegetables are one of the most often products thrown out and tons of products are thrown out annually because of poor quality. Modified atmosphere packaging (MAP) helps to maintain quality but it also increases the risk of condensation on the products which is favorable for microbial growth. The aim of the project is to reduce food waste in the supply chain by use of improved packaging solutions. Active packaging with sugars, salts, and natural antimicrobial compounds will be used to lower the risk of condensation and reduce microbial growth and decay of strawberries, and fresh and fresh-cut root crops. Existing packaging materials will be improved with regards to moisture regulation properties or replaced with more environmental friendly materials such as cartoon, paper and biofilm. It is expected that the project will lead to less food waste and higher intake of fresh fruit and vegetables.
